Cutting Resistance / Crack Progress

Finite Element Method

When materials are cut with a knife, cutting resistance is a combination of

(1)the reaction force (compressive)
(2)the frictional force between the knife edge and materials.

When cutting resin materials the frictional force is dominant.
Meanwhile, in the field of fracture mechanics, crack progress possibility is

is evaluated by the stress intensity factor which is calculated from energy
release rate around crack tip.
